Foxhound overview
The Foxhound originated in Britain, specifically for hunting and the strong hunting instinct remains today. Foxhounds are affectionate, gentle and even tempered, especially with other dogs.
This breed is not often kept solely as a pet. Its solid voice also makes it a good guard dog. Foxhounds are kept principally in the UK by hunt kennels for the hunting of foxes. Hunting men call the breed 'hounds', never dogs, and the tails 'sterns'.
Most Foxhounds in the US are American Foxhounds, not English Foxhounds. The American Foxhound is more slightly built than its English counterpart. Skilled at following scents, and working with other hounds, the American foxhound is equally well suited to life as a working animal, or as a family pet.
