Labrador overview
The Labrador probably descended from Portuguese Water Dogs taken to North East America by Portuguese sailors. Labradors actually come from Newfoundland. The name Labrador is derived from the Portuguese for 'labourer', not the place. Taken to southern England by Newfoundland fishermen in the 1800s where the breed was refined as a gundog.
Labradors are outstanding swimmers. They are one of the most popular family dogs, kind, gentle and loyal and they fit well with most family situations and has only one vice: food. Obesity is therefore quite common. Labradors are a classic breed used for guide dog work; modern examples tend to be a first cross with a Golden Retriever.
